Background
The Nagrik Adhikar Manch was formed as a presser group. The settlements in which we live, in the government documents, those settlements were recorded in the name of slums, where the problem of water, road, sanitation and school was already there and on that the government decided to remove our settlements. In 2005, Jawaharlal came up with a plan for removal under the Urban Renewal Project.
We understood the project and tried to convince the people that this project is not for our betterment but the eyes of the government are on our land, then people wanted to oppose this project.
Then the youth of Basti said that the protest should be of constitutional and non-violent way and for this we have to form an organization and give a constitutional name to it. Then an organization Nagrik Adhikar Manch was formed. After this, the Jawaharlal Urban Renewal Project was continuously constitutionally opposed from 2005 to 2011 under the leadership of the Nagrik Adhikar Manch. As a result of which, in 2012, Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh announced to cancel the proposed Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Missoin in the settlements of Polipathar area.
